Originally settled as a hamlet of Boston in 1638, the area now known as the city of Brookline is located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Brookline is home to over 63,000 residents as well as a portion of the Boston College campus, and is part of the Boston metropolitan area bordered on three sides by Boston (Allston and Brighton to the North, Fenway-Kenmore and Mission Hill/Longwood Medical to the East, and Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury to the South. The city of Newton lies to the west of Brookline. Brookline is one of Greater Boston's many cultural hubs with a diverse population comprising many different communities including part of Chestnut Hill and the city’s three main squares in North Brookline – Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, and Washington Square. These quintessential pedestrian friendly New England village squares include access to schools, pharmacies, grocers, restaurants, public transportation (MBTA busses and subways), and numerous retail and service businesses. The city is well known for its arts and is home to Puppet Showcase Theater (the only of its kind in New England), Coolidge Corner Theatre, tree-lined streets, numerous public green spaces, as well as its proximity to major highways, public transit, Cambridge and Boston sites, universities and employers. Brookline’s The Country Club was the site of the 2022 U.S. Open golf championship.
